Not a war story for sympathy. A reality check for distributed teams.

Context: I'm a Ukrainian engineer who had to leave his home because of the war. Power cuts, shaky internet, curfews. Yet last quarter I still:

  • Held 99.9% prod uptime on Bosch infra hosted 2,000 km away.
  • Deployed an Azure OpenAI PoC that writes incident summaries while the city sleeps.
  • On-call rotation? Did it from a basement shelter when the siren hit at 4 a.m.

So when a recruiter says, "Role is EU-only, Kyiv can't join due to compliance," I ask:

Compliance with what? Less productivity?

Three truths remote leads ignore:

  1. Latency isn't loyalty. Talent isn't clogging your VPN; it's unblocking your backlog.
  2. UTC+3 ≠ alien timezone. Stand-ups still happen—we just drink coffee one hour earlier.
  3. Risk is a two-way street. I have backup power & Starlink; do you have redundant expertise?

Let skill roam free—your cloud bills are global already. 🌍
